Little Mix Artist Analysis

One of our key influences regarding attitude and image is  British girl band Little Mix. They were formed in 2011 on The X Factor and have released several singles including 'Wings' and 'How Ya Doin'?'. They appeal to children and young teens, predominantly females.

These are some of the reasons we think Little Mix have become so successful:

They are relatable:
  • They started out on the X Factor so the nation has watched them grow into pop stars. This deems them to be particularly relatable to young females, as they recognise that at one point they were just like them. This delivers the message that people can achieve anything if they set their mind to it and helps to establish them as good role models.
  • Whilst artists such as Miley Cyrus advertise Jordan's and R&B stars advertise cars/expensive phones, Little Mix product placed 'Live Colour XXL' hair dye in their 'How Ya Doin'?' music video. This reflects the interests of young girls to have fun with their appearence and is also a lot more relevant and accessible to them.
  • They have all established their own personality and appearance in their videos that allows four different types of character for young girls to relate to. This makes the band more universally relatable to their target demographic. You can see this in the following video:
  • They have an interactive website that allows lots for the viewer to get involved with. For example, their core audience can follow a video diary and feel like they know them. They will also see that they are normal girls.

They value friendship:

  • Their songs rely less about love and more about reaching for your dreams, girl power and hanging out with friends. These are some lyrics that we believe demonstrate this:
"Hey how ya doin' sorry you can't get through
Why don't you leave your name and your number
And we'll get back to you"

"Mama told me not to waste my life,
She said spread your wings my little butterfly
Don't let what they say keep you up at night
And they can't detain you
Cause wings are made to fly"

  • They are presented as friends in certain shots in their video. We have picked out a few down below:

This creates the image of unity and therefore girl power.

Little Mix have a fun girly attitude that we would also like to connote. We are also targeting the same age group, so we can use the same interactive approach on our website. We are also going to emphasise individuality at the same time as unity, like Little Mix. However we want to look more mature, with cheekiness also incorporated in.
