Album Artwork Research

Fun pose of all the girls together, wearing the typical denim based fashions of the day. The title font is fun and in cartoon styled lettering, with star symbols, on a bright orange vortex background.

Classy photograph of the girls looking sophisticated, pouty and sexy. Their clothes are all of similar styles, with a uniting colour of yellow. The colour purple (opposite on the colour wheel), compliments the yellow of their outfits and is used for both the band name and album title.

Cosy photo of the girls close together looking happy and dressed in the sporty cargo trousers style as commonly seen on girls during the time the album was released. Their band name is bright and fun, with a large star symbol, with their album title being of lower emphasis.

Glamourous beauty close up facial shots of the three band members, with dewy flawless skin. The colour gold is highly prominent across the album cover, and the title and lighting compliment each other perfectly.

Happy, fun, candid style shot of the girls together, dressed very bright and fashionably. Their logo (the 5 in a circle), is seen in the O of 'Harmony', which is typical of the band imagery, and the colour red is featured across both titles.

Pastel coloured background, with a posed photograph of the girls in their typically quirky but fashionable style, featuring a lot of colours and passion. Here the album title is larger than the band title, however they have a smaller 'lm' logo in the corner as well as the title in their signature capital lettered style.

Black and white candid style photo of the girls looking summery in sunglasses, and wearing casual clothes. The larger album title in bright stenciled letters contrasts against the black and white of the photo, and gives a homemade scrapbook type feel alongside the felt tip handwritten style of the band name.

Tattoo style 'Pussycat Dolls' title, over a sexily styled and posed photo of the band members, featuring exclusively the colour black.
Cher's name in her signature style is on the mugshot police board around her neck, with the album title in bold letters in the corner, working in synergy with the drawing and cartoony style of the background of the album cover. Cher looks fiesty and fashionable in the front, whilst remaining playful and friendly.
The girls sit playfully together along a sofa in a typically friendly situation, their shoe colours match their chairs, and the album title is written across the magazines they are smiling over. The band name is in neon lights, in their signature font.

Our original band have a more grungey image with a photo of them looking very bad-ass, with cartoonised effects used over a red background, with a scribbley style band name.

Fun poses, relative to title, around the band name in the middle, which is written in their signature style.

Here the boys have matured, and with their 'Memory Lane' album, they made a return updating their image to show them in a classier way, now typically wearing suits. Here, they've changed the font they used previously in their band name titles, and are shown together in serious poses in a painted style.

Recognisable title imagery used for band name, the album title is very small here. The boys are pictured in a fun friendly way, highlighting their bond together, as they wear similarly coloured fashionable outfits.

This image shows the boys in serious straight forward poses, dressed in black and grey fashionable 'boyband' style clothes. The band name is big and central, again in grey and is written in a messy styled stencil font.

With Diana's new album she has presented a more mature and sexualised image, as shown with her cheeky photo, where she is topless underneath her bright red blazer. Her album title and name work together in synergy in similar font styles, and a constant colour scheme.

Like Diana, this album cover shows Miley as she presents her more mature and 'bad-ass' image, as accentuated with the album title 'Can't Be Tamed', and the grungey messy style of font. Her name is a large and centered feature, as she is a well establishes and famous artist, who's name is widely recognised and is used to help her sell her music. In the photo Miley looks older and more sophisticated than in her previous albums, with a brighter and shorter hair cut, and a lot of leather in her clothes.

Britney looks young, cute and girly in her pose and clothes, this image is accentuated with the curly and handwritten style font which her name is written in.

Taylor uses her bright red lipstick in the centre of the album cover photo to work in synergy with both the album name, and the colour scheme used in the title. Taylor looks beautiful, classy, mysterious and sophisticated, and similarly to Miley and Diana, this album marks a change in image  for her, as she ditches her signature curls and grows up.

This album cover shows of Eliza's crazy quirky style, with a collage of different images used, with Eliza amongst this collage imagery, in a typically different pose to that seen by solo artists. Her name is also styled uniquely, as it not only uses quite an irregular font, but is presented in a banner pulled by a cute yellow plane.

FINDINGS:
Solo artist album covers feature one artist, and so they are centrally featured, with the rest of the cover used for titles and other imagery. Group album covers show the band together, usually looking happy and friendly with each other in either a sexual or playful and cheeky way. The sizes of titles vs. names varies across different artists and different albums, but the two titles usually work in synergy either in similar fonts, or similar colours.

Girl Group Performance Research

Inspiration from other music videos, some containing performance and narrative, and some containing performance and concept:

SLIP- Stooshe
The performance section of their music video for 'Slip' takes place in three different sets, each one looks classy and fashionable, and very well lit. The girls are dressed up glamourously, with immaculate hair and make-up. The narrative shows the girls at a bowling alley, interacting with people an dancing on the lanes in customised bowling jackets and shoes.
Coutney had a sparkley gold backdrop, contrasting with her plain black outfit. Her edgy hairstyle and tattoos are really emphasized by this backdrop.
Alex is seated, on what appears to be a very large fancy sofa backdrop. The colours are plain, accentuating her hot pink outfit, and glamorous hair, make up and jewellery.
Karis's dress contrast with the striped background behind her, this backdrop has a psychedelic feel.

WRECKING BALL- Miley Cyrus
ECUs and MCUs on a plain white background with high key lighting. Her blue eyes and red lips stand out, making the image very striking, Miley sings and cries. The rest of the video shows a wrecking ball destroying a concrete room, with Miley riding it both clothed and naked, and Miley holding and licking a hammer.

Extreme close ups of Miley's face as she sings and cries, her skin looks flawless, and her make up is simple, just mascara and a strong red lip. The high key lighting accentuates the colours on her face (blue and red), against the simple white background.

Medium close ups include Mileys hands as she moves about much more as she sings, her expressions are accentuated in these shots as she sings the chorus.

WANT U BACK- Cher Lloyd ft. Astro
Performance is shown in moving images of Cher in photographs and magazines, as well as her singing to the camera in her bedroom.
Cher sings from a polaroid photo of her and her ex boyfriend, he is unmoving in the photograph, while she sings and interacts with his motionless figure. Her hand is cut off to the side, implying she has taken the photo.

Cher lies on her bed in her bedroom and sings to the photos of her ex and to the camera. The setting is dressed in a very typically girly way, and a variety of shot types and angles are used.

More poloroid pictures of Cher alone, this shows her singing to the camera from a bath filled with balloons, showing a fun and playful image.

Cher sings from a magazine advert, branded with the title 'Tough Love', this is a very current and modern image, showing Cher to be very powerful and successful.

Other photos of Cher's ex and new girlfriend show them out having fun, Cher walks into these photos and causes mischief, such as drawing moustaches, and pouring water on them. Here she sits behind them in the cinema, giving them dirty looks and throwing popcorn, whilst also singing her song.

These images are taken from the magazine advert presentation, showing a variety of different shot types within it.

EGO- The Saturdays
The video is superhero themed, showing the gilrs in their different superhero personas alongside the narrative of a guy who seems to be portrayed as a 'hero', who they are bringing the downfall of.
Frankie wears a black studded jacket, lit amongst the paparazzi, while they take no notice of her as she sings to the camera.
Una is in a dirty alleyway setting, leant against a brick wall around peeling posters some branding the male actor as a 'hero', she is lit with predominantly yellow lighting, and later steps out from the shadows, opening her jacket to reveal her superhero uniform.

Molly crouches on top of a building, holding onto a winged gargoyle, she is seen in her black and white winged outfit, with a silver lightening bolt painted on her face. She surveys her surroundings as she sings, while wind blows her hair back.
Rochelle sings from a street corner, dressed in a black mac, which she later removes to reveal her blue superhero cat suit.
Vanessa is dressed in her yellow superheo costume singing as she looks out of a motel window.
Long shot as the five sing together from two cars, all are dressed as superheroes.
Close ups of the girls from the same shot are also seen.

New song ideas

After intensive research we were struggling to find girl bands that would suit the image of our new girl band. We then tried an alternative method of looking at movie track lists. We research films that appealed to our main demographic- Girls. We looked at classic Teen films which focused on the ideo of friendship, individuality, sass and creativity.

Stooshe - Artist Analysis

English girl group from London
Members: Alexandra Buggs, Karis Anderson and Courtney Rumbold
Signed to Warner Music in August 2011
Promotional single "Betty Woz Gone" released October 2011
Official debut single, "Love Me" featuring Travie McCoy, peaked at no.5 on the UK Singles Chart
Released "Black Heart" in June 2012, peaking at no.3 after a month in the top ten.
"Slip" released as the third single from their forthcoming debut album on 12 May 2013, reached no.12.
Debut album London with the Lights On debuted at number 8 in the UK Albums Chart on 2 June 2013.
The original concept was to create an urban and soulful Spice Girls
Jo Perry put the girls together after a series of auditions and scouting in UK fashion shop Topshop  over a nine-month period.
Perry explained to HitQuarters why she chose this unconventional location for talent spotting:
"I didn't put an ad in The Stage because I didn't want people that want to be in the music industry, I wanted people that are stars but don't even know it."
Name came from the word 'Stoosh', urban slang for something expensive, "a girl who thinks she's nicer than she is," or being stoned or stashed away. They then added 'she' on the end for female empowerment or girl power. (The band's name is pronounced: stooshie)

WEBSITE

The emphasis on personality is really important to us, as we want our three girls to stand out individually, not fade into one group. When looking at the Stooshe website (www.stooshe.com) a clear sense of individuality is established with a page dedicated to each of them. The website is very interactived, with 'Where's Stooshe?' and Agony Aunt sections.Their 'Agony Aunt' section allows fans to communicate with them, and they are able to offer advice, as any one of the girls can respond to a message, their different voices come through, giving their audiences a greater understanding of the band, and a connection to them as an individual.

The girls are all highly relatable, all coming from working class backgrounds, having grown up in London, and were working at the time of them being discovered. Courtney attended a musical theatre school called Step Up in South London for a number of years, and here she was well respected as a singer, singing a number of solos in group shows over the years.

SONGS

LOVE ME-

A lot of slang is used in their songs, and a few feature the girls talking, and having banter, such as during the introduction to 'Love Me' where the girls have a fake jokey argument amongst them, and refer to guys as 'wastemen'. Their lyrics promote the strong individual girl image, asserting their dominance through highly sexualised lyrics.

"Let me give you double helpings
You’ll be screaming baby, baby, baby, baby, uh uh"

"Oh Oh Oh
Turn it up and I’ll go, coz I won't need ya no more - no
Your play’s fine but I aint got the time, why don’t you
Hurry up yeah, hurry up yeah, hurry up...... love me, ha ha ha ha ha"

"You better call ya friend jonny
You wanna hope he's in town
Coz ya know that when he blow I don't want no danger without him it ain't going down"

"Not unless its dirty dirty dirty filthy dirty uh uh"

"I don't mean to brag, I'm telling ya I'ma be the best you had so let’s roll"

"Hey diddle diddle my cat needs a fiddle...ha ha ha"

RAP (Travie McCoy): "Kiss me soft right here, I’m a freak but hey
… Me off swear to god I’m gon' leak the tape

Matter of fact I’d rather….than deal with another basket case
What a waste of a fat booty, I used to beg but why bother when they hand it to me"

The video is fun and crazy, we see the girls running around having fun in a hotel style setting. Each girl is visited in their own room, with beach, football and circus settings seen. Clothes are bright and urban, and the girls clearly have their own styles, with very big and unique hairstyles.

BLACK HEART-

About love gone wrong, being in love with someone who is wrong for you, he's emotionally damaging and has a 'black heart'.

"Naming hurts me more than weight thrown around but whatever"

"Tell me when you'll make these tears keep falling
Do you feel like a man?"

"Daddy I've fallen for a monster
Somehow he's scaring me to death
He's big and he's bad
I love him like mad
Momma, he's the best I ever had
Daddy I've fallen for a monster
He got a black heart"
The video shows the girls singing in a 60's film studio style setting, while off stage Alex is in a seemingly loving relationship, which takes a turn when we see her boyfriend with another girl. Karis and Courtney are there in every situation defending and helping Alex through it, and are seen to be always watching out for her. As they break up the girls are seen in black clothes, as if in mourning, and the hearts in the studio have been partially painted black, symbolic of the relationship regret.
