Band Style

The styling of the band is very important. During our research we noticed that solo artists as well as bands often have a signature item or accessory which makes them easily recognisable. We liked this concept and chose to explore it further. This post is some of the possible ideas that we had.

We will each have individual styles to represent our different personalities.
Emily is the sporty character of the group. She will mostly be wearing sports vest yet they will be customised with studs and glitter to fit the punk rock theme of our band.
Olivia is the girly girl of the group. She is the most innocent one of the group. She will be mainly in pink and very fashionable.
Alicia is the grunge character of the group. She will be wearing leather and studs as well as mainly being in black and grey with splashes of pink to show her girly alter ego.
All the costumes will all be different there will be similar aspects to all the costumes to show a sense of unity within the group
After we finally decided on our personal style we incorporated this into all aspects of the project- video, website and album cover. We used glitter as our signature icon to allow us to stand out from the crowd and have a recognisable feature for our fan base to identify us with. This also allows room for easier marketing campaigns as well possible merchandise.

Artist Identity

From previous research we knew that the artists identity was very important when creating a brand image. We looked at how labels wanted to be perceived by their target market and how we could use these initiatives when creating our brand and identities in order to have a greater appeal.

We wanted to create a new genre of music that meant we were able to allow able to two different audiences- those who liked rock and those who liked pop. We also wanted our band to be very relatable for girls aged 14-20. Our primary demographic are girls who are into fashion and films as well as different genres of music. Our USP of our band is that we are unique with our collaboration of rock and pop.
OUR BAND NAME:
ALL THAT GLITTERS

We chose this as our band name as it shows the girly features of our band. Its an old saying so will be instantly recognised but older generations as well as younger generations. Further more it allows of a distinctive image of glitter throughout our advertisement campaigns and our look as a band. This symbol can be used to represent both genre types.

We believe that the characters that we have created are best suited for our target market as we have created three different characters. These will be able to appeal to different types of people via their different personality traits and characteristics

Research into our final idea

When looking at parodies we decided to look at the most influential videos from our chosen genre and pick out signifiers which will help us to portray the genres more effectively.punk grunge - avril lavigne- girlfriend, what the hell

pop rock - miley cyrus- who owns my heart, aly and aj- potential break up song, girls aloud- sound of the underground

rap - get jiggy with it- will smith, hey how ya doin- missy elliot, becky G- oath, becky from the block, play it agai

country - talor swift-mean, mumford and sons

sleepover- me and my girls, angus thongs p snogging, 13 going on 30

Each of the videos below that we have chosen to do further research in because they each contain different elements we wanted to replicate either it be costume, mise-en-scene or props.

Location - Studio

In the following post I will discuss our recent decision regarding location and why we have decided this.

We are going to use the Seward Studio to film our performance section of the five different styled bands. The studio is completely plain, so can be styled in any way we want for our music video.

We'd seen in the music videos from the previous year how the white studio curtain backdrop can be used with coloured lights to create different coloured backdrops, and this is something we are looking to experiment with prior to our shoot.

We have filmed things in the studio before so are familiar with the process of filming in a fully equipped studio, yet with the facilities to experiment further.

We can completely control the lighting we want with professional equipment.

Band Name

Before deciding on our name we brainstormed, writing our ideas down below.

We explored idioms and sayings:

All that glitters is not gold
Curiosity Killed the Cat
Once Bitten, Twice Shy
Sink or Swim
Talk is Cheap

We also looked at language translations of different words that stood out to us:

aurum -gold
fuge- fly
puella- girl
mulieris- woman
feminam- female
pullus- chick
Domina- lady
schola- school
pecuniam- money
tribus- three
Trio- trio
Unum- one
omnibus- for all
amicum- friend
unitáte- unity
simul- together
esse
mickle

In the end we agreed on 'All That Glitters' as we believe that it is catchy and memorable. The reference to 'glitter' can be played on when it comes to making an album name and is notably associated with girls. Therefore we believe it will be a good name and suits our band. Our next step is to look for a signature font and create a logo for our band.

Contacting the record label

'No Sleep Tonight' was released by Polydor Records on 21st March 2005.

Polydor Records were established in 1924, and are owned by Universal Music Group, and are based in the UK, their American branch is now defunct, but remains one of the strongest labels in the UK.

They represent Take That, Girls Aloud, N-Dubz, Cheryl Cole, The Saturdays, Kaiser Chiefs, S Club 7, Ellie Goulding, White Lies, Kate Nash, Crystal Castles. And acts as the UK label for American-based acts under Interscoe-Geffen-A&M, such as Eminem, The All-American Rejects, Pussycat Dolls, Snoop Dogg, Gwen Stefani, Busta Rhymes, 50 Cent, Lana Del Rey and Lady Gaga.

However, they dropped The Faders in April 2006, after just three singles with them.

The main way of contacting Polydor records appears to be through their Facebook site, as their previous website www.polydor.co.uk now links to their official Facebook page.

From a resident advisor contact website, I found contact details for Polydor Records, which are:
72 Black Lion Lane, London, W6 9BE
info@polydor.co.uk

We decided to attempt to contact Polydor via their Facebook page, as this seemed to be most accessible, and appears to be the site they use predominantly and direct their audiences to.

We have not yet heard back from Polydor.

Meeting and Idea no.3

With our ideas rapidly changing, it is important to make sure we are having regular meetings, whilst thinking about potential ideas in our free time. In the following post I discuss our newest idea.

With our third meeting, we decided to abandon our plans to shoot in London, as we felt this would be an unwise decision due to difficulty, and the fact that we have the studio available to us. The Monopoly imagery did not seem extensive enough to base our video narrative around, as it relied on a few props, and a few London road signs, and the context behind the idea (why the girls are in a Monopoly game) proved to be very difficult to portray without coming off as far fetched and ridiculous, and potentially losing the attention of our audience.

When thinking about our strengths  and the best suited styles and settings for our group, we came up with a new idea:

The three girls are in a sleepover setting, presented as your very typically girly girls, eating pizza, doing makeovers, having pillow fights and watching TV. As they flick through the channels, they see themselves performing dressed in different styles portraying different kinds of girl band.

PUNKY

QUIRKY/HIPSTER POP

RAP

 R&B

 ROCK

 GRUNGE/INDIE

POP

We think this would be a good idea because it relies heavily on performance, which is one of the strengths of our group. It also works with the slightly ambiguous genre surrounding our song choice - the merge between pop/rock/punk. We were also very keen to incorporate costume changes into video, as this is something very accessible to us as girly girls. We also like how the idea is not only interesting, but relatively simple compared to our previous ideas.
