Boy Band Specific Influences

Back Lights

In both the Five video and the JLS one there are back lights but there are lots more of them. However, we like the effect which is why it is one of our key influences.

In this video they are used more subtly. This is a key influence because it is an example of the back lights working very well with black and white editing (something we are also thinking of using).

Water

Using water is something used in music videos to enhance the sexual desirability of male (and sometimes female) characters. We thing it's something very open to comedic satire so would like to incorporate something like this into our music video.

Dance Routines

These are examples of a typical dance routine which we could satire.

This is an example of One Direction (who pride themselves on being unconventional) satire boy band dance routines.

As you can see the members are not taking the dance routine seriously.

This is the exact move we want to copy.

Setting- Sleepover

This blog post shows our research and planning into where we will be filming the sleepover section and the practicalities of it.
The country, boy band, rap, grunge and punk rock genre are all going to be shot in the studio. The start of the video, the sleepover scene, will be filmed at my house. In order to create the right atmosphere we are going to decorate my house to make it stereotypically girly. We have looked at many examples as inspiration as to how to decorate my room.
'Me and my girls':
This music video by fifth harmony was a good example of a sleepover setting. The main colour schemes are pink and neon. This connotes the girly feel. Furthermore scattered around the room are stereotypical girl signifiers such as teddy bears, toys, make up and jewellery. Furthermore from analysing this clip we have also thought of more typical slumber party events to add into our sequence such as dancing and taking pictures.

Hair and Make-Up- Sleepover

For this setting we are aiming to achieve a casual, girly type environment, recognisable to teenagers.

HAIR:
  • Less glamorous than previous shoots, with a less 'polished' look.
  • Loose and wavy
  • Pink rollers
MAKE UP:

  • Minimal and natural
  • Mascara, small amount of foundation or concealer, a touch of pink blusher

This is to ensure we create a realistic sleepover setting, whilst still looking good as this is conventional of the music industry.

Country Costume, Hair and Make Up

ALICIA:

  • Alicia's outfit consists of a denim shirt, and shorts, with dark leather cowboy boots.
  • She will have a messy bohemian style bun hairstyle.
  • She will also be playing a ukulele.

OLIVIA:

  • Olivia will wear a check patterned shirt, denim shorts and tan cowboy boots.
  • She will wear her hair wavey and loose.
  • She plays an acoustic guitar.
Alicia and Olivia's outfits are relatively similar in their styling, as this echoes typical country and folk styling, and unites the band image.

EMILY:

  • Emily's outfit is a short floaty cream dress, with detailing on the bodice and sleeves, and a sleeveless denim jacket (not pictured) worn with short suede brown heeled boots with tassels
  • Hair will be styled as very curly (left in french plaits the night before the shoot), and left loose and flowing
  • She will play a tambourine.

Make up will be quite plain and natural, with foundation, mascara, light eye shadow and blusher, with a natural lip.

LOGO

FIRST LOGO EXPERIMENTATION:

  • Gold and pink glitter background to the lettering.
  • Fancy 'tattoo' style font.
  • Pink and gold sparkler sparks background on black.

  • Very similar to the above, but with the sparkler background smaller and more central, so the lightest part is behind the lettering

  • A very similar logo again, but with the background image much smaller again
  • Black outline on text

  • Tattoo style font, with the top words curling and arching over the bottom words
  • No glitter, just a gold and pink glow outline

  • White tattoo style lettering
  • Pink space nebula background

  • White lettering
  • On a bright pink glitter splat, on a black background.

Black lettering, with a gold and pink glitter overlay.
White (transparent) background
  • Very similar to a previous logo design, but with a slightly different word and glitter layout.

  • Simple gold glitter letters on a black background
SECOND EXPERIMENTATIONS:

  • Curly style lettering in gold glitter, with a black outline

  • Same as above, but with a pink glitter star shape background.
FINAL LOGO:

  • We decided that our previous attempts were missing something, and thought we should try a more clean cut and classy approach.
  • We all really liked the logo for The Saturdays, and found it looked really stylish and effective, and hence we also decided to use smooth capital letters.
  • We used the font ******, and joined the letters in each word together, to create a unified sophisticated logo.
  • For our album cover, we used white, as we had a black background, but on our website we put our logo in black, as we were showing it over the top of a brightly lit photograph.
  • Members of our target audience responded better to this newly designed logo (without knowing which was the final logo design), finding the clean and classy style much more suited to our band, as the brighter and curlier designs looked far younger and tackier, especially used in conjunction with the colour pink.

Pop/Rock Costume

We have decided that our Pop/Rock genre (the actual identity of our band) is going to be strongly associated with the colours black and gold. We changed our mind from black and pink to black and gold because we feel that black and gold isn't already strongly associated with girl bands. We also believe it relates to our band name more, and creates more of a brand around us.

Make Up

After going to a Jack Wills party we were inspired by this particular make up look. Here is a zoomed in picture of the specific look we're looking for:

We will achieve this using regular make up glitter put on top of a mac gel.

That is something we are all looking to have, although not necessarily on the same eye. However the rest of our make-up will vary from person to person, for example bright lips or nude lips.

Clothing

Some stuff we found already is down below:

New Look - Black, lacy and girly.

Bershka - This has hints of gold but may not show up on camera. Furthermore it is quite revealing, not something we want to associate with our band.

Topshop - Revealing but fitting both the criteria for black and glittery.

Boohoo - Revealing but both black and gold
Dorethy Perkins - Despite not being glittery, they are shiny so could also work. They are also very high street so our target audience will have access to them.

Topshop - Although black and gold these are quite casual.

Forever 21 - Black and gold but does not look that nice on. Minor detail of gold may not show up on camera.

Topshop - Black with velvet detail that is shimmery in certain lights. However, the shimmer may not show up on camera and these are quite casual
Zoomed in - As you can see the shimmer is very understated, even with a flash camera.

These are examples of what's in the shops that fit our style. We may have to purpose potential items if we feel we cannot create a style from the clothes we already own.

Rap Costume

In order to portray rap in a funny and recognizable way, we will have to abide by the stereotypes already present in the industry.

One immediately renowned element of rap costume is baggy t shirts, often plain white or associated with sport - notably basketball which is very popular in America.

Vest tops are another clothing style popular within rap music. However, we made the decision not to use these, as we wanted a girly style within our rap image.

This was also the case with dropping our trousers below some boxers, another classic rap style.

One very current trend we will be using however are snapbacks, associated with basketball also.

One or two of us will also be wearing crop tops, as this is a fashion girl hip hop stars tend to wear.
